IRRC COZY CORNER

In this Cozy Corner of our Collaborative, we create space for community. We read together, we eat together, and we celebrate life and each other.

Global Voices Book Circle

This IRRC Book Circle explores the diverse stories of refugees and immigrants, highlighting both the small and significant acts of welcoming and generosity that transform lives and shape communities here and abroad. Through shared reading and open discussion, we aim to foster deeper empathy and understanding for those living in both arriving and receiving communities, and invite members to engage with narratives that challenge assumptions and inspire compassionate action.

Annual Summer Community Read

Each year, the Immigrant and Refugee Resource Collaborative (IRRC) selects a book and invites the community to join in reading it. Launched during World Refugee Awareness Week in June, this community-wide initiative encourages book clubs, families, summer camps, and neighbors to engage with the story.

Following a summer of reading, we organize a series of fall events that are designed to celebrate the book and its powerful message.

Stay tuned for the announcement of our next selection in June 2025. In the meantime, please explore our 2024 celebration of When Stars Are Scattered below!

If you’re interested in a curated list of children’s or adult books about refugee and immigrant stories, please check out this link. We’d be happy to collaborate with you on a project! We host a quarterly book club called “Global Voices Book Circle” with the theme, “Reading beyond borders, understanding beyond limits.”

When Stars are Scattered
2024 look back

2024's Community Read was When Stars Are Scattered by Omar Mohamed and Victoria Jamieson! This heartwarming graphic novel, suitable for all ages, was our focus for a summer of reading and a fall of community engagement.

When Stars Are Scattered tells the story of Omar and his younger brother Hassan, who spend their childhood in a refugee camp in Kenya. Through beautiful illustrations and moving storytelling, the book provides a deeply personal look at the struggles and hopes of refugees.

Both small and large groups enjoyed When Stars Are Scattered over the summer. Whether  reading it as individuals, with family/friends, or in a book club, this book promises to soften hearts and open spirits.
